Throwback Thursday: San Simeon, California
I was going through my hard drive last night, looking for an old photo to post on my Instagram account today—It’s “Throwback Thursday” after all—when I came across a few shots I took last year in San Simeon, California. There were a few that I’d dismissed from the time I took them, and a couple that upon revisiting them I’m kind of happy with.
Early each year Laura Carney and I travel to Los Angeles to visit some friends and to escape the nasty Northeast weather. Last year, because she works for Good Housekeeping—a Hearst magazine—she wanted to check out Hearst Castle. So we took our tiny rental car and made the four-hour trip north to San Simeon. The smog in California during our visit was super thick. Many of my landscape photos are drenched in a hazy film because of it. But in some of the San Simeon photos, it works pretty well. While my camera couldn’t see to far out into the ocean, it did obstruct the sun enough for me to shoot directly into it without too much over-exposure.
After going through a handful of the photos from that trip, here are a few of my favorites. Two are similar landscape shots, with one processed in Lightroom for an Ansel Adams kind of feel. I used to love that shot. But now that I’ve processed the color shot a bit, I’m really in love with how it turned out too.
