Posting Your Passion on Instagram
This week I’m participating in something called the Insta180 7-Day Instagram Challenge, headed by renowned wedding photographer, Jasmine Star. Each day I receive a prompt about what to post to my Instagram account along with ways to talk about whatever the subject is in your caption in an honest and engaging way.
The goal of this challenge is to grow awareness of your business. I don’t have one of those yet, so I’m focusing on “branding” with consistent work and interactions. Hopefully establishing that now will give me a leg up when I do finally launch my business.
In addition to posting our own work, we’re asked to like and comment on three other posts each day—preferably from Insta180 participants. This part is what’s been really opening my eyes to the power of Instagram even more than the images themselves.
As I scroll through the Insta180 hashtag posts, I’ve found myself really moved by some of the captions. A lot of them are from passionate people who thrive through creativity. I need to research them a bit further to see whether they’ve always posted this way or if it’s something new, prompted by this challenge. But whatever the case, I’m happy I’ve taken the time to read through these captions because I find them incredibly inspiring, and it’s reminded me to dive deep and not just scroll past things, because even if the photos aren’t that interesting to me, maybe the stories that go along with them are. It’s odd to say this about a photo sharing app, but the images are only one part of the recipe for business success on Instagram.
There are still a few days left in this challenge before the finalé: a webinar Q&A with Jasmine Star. But even if I learn nothing else, I think I’ve already taken a ton away from this that is going to help me moving forward, and I’m happy to share it with you. Mainly, it’s just: SLOW DOWN. You might be missing a lot of the good stuff if you don’t.
