Now that Breaking Bad has ended another incredible season–did those last few episodes blow you away like they did me? (Ha! a pun!)–it’s time to move on to Mad Men. Season four begins in about a month, and I couldn’t be more excited. Like a lot of people in the design and advertising communities, this show is tops in my book. I don’t know if it’s the profession, the characters, the story, or maybe a little bit of everything, but people can’t seem to get enough of it. For me, it’s probably all of it, but who can deny how cool a customer Don Draper is? What I wouldn’t give to pull groundbreaking ideas seemingly out of thin air like he does! It’s kind of Housean. Wait, maybe that’s why I watch House, too. No, that’s more about Thirteen than problem solving.

Whatever your reason for loving Mad Men, I can’t imagine you’ll be disappointed with season four. Creator Matthew Weiner says: “The theme of the season is ‘Who am I?’ It’s about stripping away the things that these people think define them. Once they’re taken away, they just may have to look at who they really are.” Seeing the beginnings of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce in last season’s finale certainly made it clear that everyone is basically starting from scratch in season four. And the teaser post on the left certainly implies that. But I wonder if these upcoming episodes are going to focus on the work more than the personal? I’d imagine you couldn’t have a ton of private-life turmoil while also building a new business from the ground up. Without that personal drama, though, there wouldn’t be much of a show left. I’m sure those elements will find their way back in there somehow. That’s what 1960s ad men were all about, it seems: doing great work, and falling apart outside the office. Maybe that’s what most people are like, and that’s part of why Mad Men is such a success.

As I’ve mentioned before on this blog, AMC is doing it right. Their original dramas are the best on television right now, and just like season three of Breaking Bad, I think season four of Mad Men is going to continue their new tradition of making our jaws drop every Sunday night. I just wish there weren’t four more weeks to wait.
