Picador Modern Classics

 In Design

I recently designed the interiors for a series of books for Picador called Picador Modern Classics. At 3-1/16″ x 5-11/16″, they’re tiny editions of some huge titles: Denis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son (one of my favorite books ever), Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping, Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf, and Jeffrey Eugenidies’ The Virgin Suicides, put out to commemorate the imprint’s 20th anniversary. The covers—done by the great Kelly Blair—are a beautiful series design printed on shiny pearlized stock.

On the inside the design is pretty straighforward. I matched the title boxes on the cover and did my best to make the type breathable at such a small trim size without the book coming in at a huge page count.

The books are getting some attention in the press, which is kind of neat. Entertainment Weekly interviewed Picador’s creative director, Henry Sene Yee, about the series. As did The Casual Optimist.

Pick up a set of these little guys and I’m sure you’ll have as much fun reading them as I did working on them.
