I hope you can find it at the library Steven. It's a pretty quick read too, once you get into it.

That's a good recommendation, Carol! I feel like someone else told me about that book not too long ago, but they definitely didn't sell it as well as you did. I'm going to see if my local library has it, then I can feel like I'm doing absolutely nothing by running my measly two miles everyday, heh.

Thanks for the tips, Carol. I have been looking into supplements—vitamin C and others—so it's good to know what I have to look forward to in terms of "purging."

And I do feel much better, several days after the cleanse ended. I've had much more energy and, most importantly, I think I'm eating a lot better after that experience. Prior to it, while I was eating a vegan diet and relatively healthy, I was including a lot of things that I just don't crave anymore. Namely things that aren't fruits and vegetables. Though, I do still have a hankering for vegan pizza!

A book I found to be incredibly inspirational, even though I wouldn't call myself a runner and I don't aspire to ultra-running, is: Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall.

McDougall writes the chapters like magazine articles and he's got that whole "hook" at the end of the chapter going to propel you into the next chapter. The writing is pretty good, but the content is what is so inspirational.

The runners profiled in the book are a rag-tag bunch of misfits who are running for their lives. And boy do they run! They run 100 miles and keep going. They run in blistering sun, freezing cold, and up mountains for marathon lengths...and keep going into the night.

One of the runners in this book, if I remember correctly, is so hard core he had a surgical procedure done to remove his toe nails. Now that is some hard core running.

I recommend it for the contagious thrill you get from vicariously living alongside these nutty runners for the length of the book. I swear, by the last chapter I had (brief) aspirations of running off into the wild and never stopping.

Thanks for posting this.

I've never done a juice cleanse but I do eat lots and lots of veggies (I do eat animal protein too though) and I'm wondering if the benefits of the natural fiber you eat in apples, cucumbers, carrots, etc. is better than just juice because the fiber is also cleansing the inside of your gut and intestines?

Also, you didn't mention this, but if you take a natural Vitamin C supplement and crank it up to maybe 2000 mg a day and drink LOTS of water it will (1) boost your immune system, (2) help promote urination which is the body's natural cleansing system, (3) make your skin look great. The downside to Vit C if you are not used to taking it is it will increase the urge to purge not just urine. You need to ramp up gently over a few days and like I said make sure there is lots of water.

Thanks again, I like the recipes. Would be curious to see if you feel any better now, a few days later, or if the effects wore off right away?

That's probably true, Heather. I'm guessing it's all water weight that I lost. But I think that if you go on one of these cleanses and don't overdo it when you're back to eating, and you exercise, most of it will probably stay off. I'll keep you posted!

The weight loss was only one of the reasons I did it though. Even if I gain those pounds back, I feel a lot better overall. Though, that might not last if I step on the scale and it's back where it was when I began. We'll see.

that's so funny..just last week I planned on doing a 3 day liquid diet. Didn't follow through because my dr. said that all the weight you lose will come right back and you could end up gaining. hopefully they were wrong, if so maybe I will try it

I do a 1-day juice fast every now and then--it's invigorating and feels good. I make my own juices, so it's easy and cheap. You just have to have a good balance of veggies & fruit. Good luck with the 3-day diet! I don't think I could go even that long. . .

yeah, MATES is on the nerdist network. and yes, luke burbank is on wait! wait! pretty often. the show is daily for about an hour, and because they stream it and record it most of the time (no edits), it can get to be hit or miss. but it is pretty comforting once you get used to it.

i tend to listen to things while i'm working on DIY projects and cleaning house. also, sometimes when i'm drawing or crafting for long periods of time. autopilot things that require use of my hands and eyes.

my friend on WTF is victor varnado. i think he was on a few months ago.

Oooh! I've meant to listen to Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (that's on the Nerdist network, right?), but I'm stuffed to the gills with podcasts already. I usually listen to two episodes of various things on the train each day, but there's so much more I want to cram into my earholes if I had the time.

I haven't listened to Luke Burbank's show, but I think he's on Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me! a lot, right?

Who is your friend from WTF?! That's so awesome. He gets some great guests, and, as of today, he's officially going to be broadcast on IFC as well.
